Braces

Braces

Braces are fabric or leather straps worn over the shoulders to hold up trousers. The straps can be elasticated or the ends can be formed in either an X or a Y shape. There have been many new types of braces released over the last 300 years, however they were first invented by Albert Thurston in 1820 due to a certain cut of trouser being unsuitable for wear with a belt. Over time, braces have slowly began to decrease in wear, in the 1930's waistcoats, which covered the braces, were less of the fashion and therefore most men switched back to belts.
